An Australian hotel popular with gay men has won the right to refuse entry to heterosexuals and lesbians, officials and the owner said Monday.

The Peel Hotel in Melbourne won an exemption from the Equal Opportunity Act to prevent insults and abuse directed toward gays in its bars and nightclubs, owner Tom McFeely told AFP.

“The hotel predominantly markets itself towards homosexual males, towards gay men and we want to protect the integrity of the venue as well as continue to make the men feel comfortable,” McFeely said.

“When large numbers of heterosexuals or even lesbians are in the hotel that changes the atmosphere and many gay men can feel uncomfortable.”

The landmark decision by a civil tribunal gives the establishment — which does not offer accommodation — the right to refuse entry to people considered a threat to the safety and comfort of its patrons.

Helen Szoke, the chief executive of the Victoria state government’s Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission, said the Peel Hotel’s gay clientele had experienced harassment, hostility and violence.

“(They) also have felt as though they’ve been like a zoo exhibit with big groups of women on hens’ parties coming to the club,” she said.

Gay only hotels fear equality law: Will be forced to accept heterosexuals February 4, 2007

Hoteliers chasing the pink tourist pound have joined criticism of a law outlawing discrimination against homosexuals.

The hotels, which cater for the thriving “exclusively gay” tourism market, say that they should be exempt from the Sexual Orientation Regulations as they will be forced to accept heterosexual guests.

Some say that a ban on “gay only” advertising could put them out of business.

There were also concerns that some heterosexual couples might be unhappy if they unwittingly booked into a gay hotel.

John Bellamy, who runs Hamilton Hall, in Bournemouth, described the new laws as “discrimination against gays”. He said: “We are a unique venue and we only admit gay and bisexual men. Under this law, we would go out of business. This so-called anti-discrimination law is actually discriminatory as it discriminates against gays.”

Another hotelier, Mark Hurst, co-owner of the exclusively gay Guyz hotel, in Blackpool, said that his gay clientele would feel uncomfortable mixing with straight customers.

The hotel had been catering for the gay market for the past 20 years, but only went “exclusive” last year because of customer demand.

He said: “It’s not all good news at all. I don’t welcome it one little bit. We intend to stay ‘men only’ exclusively for as long as we can.

“When we had a mixed environment, with gay, bi and heterosexual customers, people didn’t behave as they naturally would.

Lawsuit Questions Gay Roommate Preference February 1, 2007

Everyone knows finding a roommate is an exercise in futility-when it’s not a real-live reality show, “Weirdoes of the World.” In New York especially, where rents have reached, as the New York Times put it (in an article about the booming business in private detectives ratting out people renting under false premises), rents have reached “the exosphere,” finding a roommate is a not-so-small cottage industry.

That’s why a recent case in California’s Ninth Circuit Court in Pasadena is raising eyebrows. The case brings up a host of issues about stating specific preferencing in roommate ads, not least of which is sexual orientation.

The suit alleges that advertising such preferences is, in fact, discriminatory and violates longstanding and sacrosanct federal Fair Housing statutes. The Fair Housing Council’s of the San Fernando Valley and San Diego against Roommates.com filed the suit. Although it has yet to be decided, both housing groups have been looking at Craig’s List ads as well.

They’ll probably find plenty to buttress their argument. Craig’s List’s roommate ads have become notorious for the finicky and sometimes downright kinky specifications.

According to the Ninth Circuit lawsuit, if a straight woman were to advertise that she is seeking a gay male roommate, it could be seen as potentially discriminatory towards applicants who aren’t gay males. For the record, Craig’s List posts “stating a discriminatory housing post is illegal” at the top of its real estate pages.

On any given day in New York, however, a city that is universally acknowledged to be bursting at the seams, thousands of people are looking for a place to live. For those without the means to afford their own space-and in New York’s hyperinflated real estate market-that includes many, many more souls than anywhere else in the United States-finding a roommate with an apartment and lease is often their only hope.

Bigotry Against Christians Now Entertainment for NBC and CBS January 12, 2007

World Net Daily is reporting two stories that show that bigotry against Christians on television is becoming almost common place. The first involves the show “Late Night With Conan O’Brien”:

Excerpt:

NBC has plummeted to the level of CBS, with a late-night skit that blatantly mocks Christianity by portraying Jesus as a homosexual voyeur, a stunt that would have been instantly condemned nationwide if it had focused on any subject other than Christianity, according to a pro-life leader.

Excerpt:

“The NBC and CBS television networks may be rival corporations, but they have one thing in common,” he said. “Both networks have allowed programming that blatantly mocks Christianity.”
He told WND in an interview that the fact that such ridicule is allowed in the U.S. reflects more on Christians than on non-Christians.
“We’ve been put in the back of society’s bus. The bad thing is we’re willing to do it. If we responded like blacks, Jews, you name the different groups, homosexuals… If we responded like they do, only in love, this kind of thing wouldn’t happen. It wouldn’t be tolerated here,” he said.

Excerpt:

In the latest episode, O’Brien introduces the skit: “Our last new character’s heart is in the right place, even if he’s a complete idiot. Please welcome … the homophobic country western singer.”
Then a middle-aged man wearing western clothes comes out from behind a curtain and starts to play a guitar and sing:

Oh I love you Jesus
But only as a friend.

You touched my heart but I hope

That’s where the touchin’ ends.

You’re always lookin’ over me

When I need a higher power.

But you better look at somethin’ else

When I’m in the shower.

“The idea that anyone would think about the Son of God in this way is simply appalling,” Scott said. “The inferences that permeate the song are utterly disgusting.”

Scott said he’s written to Kevin Reilly, president of NBC Entertainment, objecting to the airing of this material.

“I notice the song was not about a Rabbi. I notice the song was not about Buddha. I notice the song was not about Muhammad. If it had been about any of these, the network would surely have disallowed the airing of such garbage,” Scott said in the letter. “But since the song was about Jesus Christ, nothing was done.”

The other case involves the show “Two and a Half Men”:

LOS ANGELES — A heterosexual former Los Angeles police officer is suing the department, alleging she was fired after complaining about alleged discrimination by her gay supervisors, according to court papers obtained Monday.  Cindy S. Perez, who alleges wrongful termination, sexual orientation discrimination and retaliation, is asking for unspecified general and punitive damages.  Lt. Paul Vernon, an LAPD spokesman, declined to comment on the lawsuit filed last Tuesday in Los Angeles Superior Court.

“Being that this is a court case is in litigation, there is nothing I can really say about it,” Vernon said.

Perez, 38, of Buena Park, was hired by the LAPD as an officer in July 1994 and was assigned to the Pacific Division in 2000, according to her court papers.”(Perez) was aware that LAPD’s Pacific Division was and had been a lesbian-friendly environment and had treated non-lesbian females … differently,” her lawsuit states.Heterosexual female officers at the division were targeted for harassment and negative employment actions and were not given the same opportunities as lesbians, she alleges.

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil: Brazil’s lower house of Congress has passed a bill making discrimination against homosexuals a crime punishable by at least a year in jail, the bill’s sponsor said Friday.

The bill, passed Thursday, makes discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation a crime equal to discrimination on the basis of race, ethnicity, religion, gender and national origin — which have carried prison sentences since 1989, said Congresswoman Iara Bernardi.

The bill now goes before the Senate, which has not yet set a date to vote.

Betto de Jesus, director of the Sao Paulo-based Brazilian Association of Gays, Lesbians and Transgendered People, said the law would give homosexuals federal protection for the first time.

“We always wanted to have homophobia be considered a crime equal to racism,” he said.

Will Hollywood and the news media repudiate Will Ferrell’s ridicule
of Southern white Christian males as well as Mel Gibson’s Anti-Semitic comments?
Don’t hold your breath!
By Dr. Ted Baehr with Dr. Tom Snyder

This week, in the wake of the media storm over Mel Gibson’s anti-Semitic comments during a drunk-driving arrest, one of the six major Hollywood studios will release a comedy starring self-described lefty Will Ferrell, called TALLADEGA NIGHTS: THE BALLAD OF RICKY BOBBY. A satire of the NASCAR racing scene, the movie is a racist, bigoted work that ridicules the Bible Belt, Southern white men, Christianity, Jesus Christ, the family, and American masculinity.

For forty years, the United States has lived with a variety of government programs applying preferential treatment based on race or gender or both. These programs have generally been limited to education and public contracting.

Recently, in a 2-1 decision, a panel of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals handed down a decision which may provide a foundation for applying preferential treatment to freedom of speech. If allowed to stand, the decision could authorize local governments to set varying limits to free expression, depending on the race, religion, or sexual orientation of the listener.

– It’s okay for guest houses catering to a homosexual clientele to discriminate against heterosexual couples, women, and lesbians, the Commission on Gender Equality ruled recently, saying it is a “necessity in our democratic society.”

The Human Rights Commission received an official complaint against two Amsterdam guest houses over a year ago, stating that the resorts were billed as “men only.” The Gay and Lesbian Alliance initiated the action after claiming to receive 107 complaints of discrimination from women, lesbians and heterosexual couples who had been turned away, Pretoria News reported yesterday.

Flyers offering cash rewards for the killings of homosexuals participating in the upcoming World Pride Jerusalem Parade have been distributed in the city.

The flyers, which promise nearly $5,000 to “anyone who causes the death of one of the people of Sodom and Gomorrah,” were found in mailboxes in several Jerusalem neighborhoods, including the ultra-orthodox Mea Shearim area, the Jerusalem Post reported Tuesday.

Ynetnews.com reported the flyers, distributed by a group called the “Red Hand for Redemption,” decried the march, scheduled for Aug. 10, saying: “During this parade, 300,000 corrupt animals are anticipated to march through the holy city of Jerusalem, waiting avidly for the chance to put themselves on display before our children and our sacred Torah. They will try as hard as they can to defile as many of our innocent children as they can,” Ynetnews.com reported.

The Jerusalem Post said there have been several unconfirmed anonymous reports that the event’s organizers were considering moving it to Tel Aviv
