Berea College — and its emphasis on providing a college education to those who don’t have the means to pay for it — should become a model for the rest of the country, renowned scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. told the school’s graduates yesterday. The nation needs an economic bill of rights, guaranteeing access to a safe, good education, affordable health care and a place to live, said Gates, a Harvard professor of African-American studies and a cultural critic.
He challenged the 245 graduates to do better than his generation.
“Will you have the will to insist that the Berea ideal becomes the American ideal?” he asked.
Gates noted that Berea, which was founded in 1855, was the first interracial college in the south. He said the school has been a model for the rest of the country ever since.
The college, which admits only low-income students and does not charge tuition, awarded Gates an honorary degree of humane letters. Jean Fairfax, a civil rights leader who began her career at Kentucky State College, now Kentucky State University, was also awarded an honorary degree.
An economic bill of rights would have the effect of affirmative action for the poor, Gates said. Race-based affirmative action provided a way for blacks to enter the middle class, and he was one of those who benefited, Gates said.
Molefi Asante, professor of African-American studies at Temple University, led a protest yesterday in front of the Franklin Institute claiming the museum’s exhibit on King Tutankhamun is racist.”This is a crime scene,” he shouted. “This is an area of criminal theft, identity theft.”
Among the grievances shared by members of the Association of Kemetic Nubian Heritage, of which Asante is president, is that the exhibit has no mention of Africa and that information within suggests that King Tut, an African, was white.
Asante specifically pointed to a representation of Tut that “looks more like Boy George than the boy king.”
About 50 protesters walked in front of the crowded museum stairs carrying signs bearing statements including “Nefertiti is my sister,” “Stop stealing our history” and “King Tut’s daddy was black.”
Asante said the exhibit doesn’t tell visitors Egypt is in Africa, and he believes that many people leave thinking Egypt is in Europe.
He claims the museum did this for “commercial reasons.”
Discriminating Lenders, or Just Discrimination? When mortgage lenders refuse to write loans on central-city rowhouses, does that violate federal fair-housing rules?
What about refusing to write mortgages on houses in a community dominated by an ethnic group? Or not offering mortgage loans for houses that may be used in part to accommodate disabled adults?
Just how much protection do fair-lending and other civil rights laws provide to mortgage applicants who are rejected not because of their credit scores or financial capacities but possibly because of the location, type or potential use of their homes?
A major consumer group is mounting a campaign aimed at nailing down the answers. The National Community Reinvestment Coalition filed lawsuit May 9 against NovaStar Mortgage, a subsidiary of publicly traded NovaStar Financial, based in Kansas City, Mo. The suit, filed in U.S. District Court in the District, charges that NovaStar has repeatedly violated the Fair Housing Act by refusing to offer mortgages on rowhouses in downtown Baltimore, on homes on Indian reservations anywhere in the country, and on houses that may be used in part to shelter and care for disabled adults.
Such bans have “no business justification,” according to the suit, and illegally discriminate against African Americans, Latinos, Native Americans and people with disabilities.

Five black current and former employees of Bank of America Corp. have sued the second-largest U.S. bank, accusing it of racial discrimination by steering lucrative clients to their white counterparts. The 29-page complaint, filed Thursday with the U.S. District Court in Boston, contends that the bank discriminates against African-Americans in pay, promotions, training and support services.
It said the Charlotte, North Carolina-based bank regularly teams African-American workers together and assigns them to largely minority neighborhoods and low net-worth clients.
When the workers complained, according to the lawsuit, the bank said it believed that clients are more “comfortable” dealing with bankers and brokers of their own race.

A Hollywood union has accused an executive producer of “Law & Order: SVU” of making racist and sexist remarks, claiming he often refers to Asian-Americans as “Chinamen.”
The Intl. Assn. of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) said it has complained to the show’s producer, NBC Universal Television, in three instances involving allegations against executive producer Ted Kotcheff over the past three years.
In the latest allegation, Kotcheff is accused of referring to a crew member as Stepin Fetchit, an old Hollywood stereotype denoting a servile, simple-minded black man.
The union said its attorneys notified NBC Universal brass in a letter dated April 7 that Kotcheff also told the crew member to “get your Caribbean ass out of here — go back to the Caribbean.”
The letter also claims Kotcheff “frequently refers to Asian Americans as ‘Chinamen’ and describes women in sexually derogatory and demeaning terms,” according to an IATSE press release distributed Wednesday.
The question is will this outcome affect Jesse Jackson’s scholarship offer for the accuser?
He said he is waiting until the woman is “strong enough” to meet with him for prayer, and so he can formally offer her a scholarship. He said the offer stands, regardless of the outcome of the case.

A lawsuit will be Don Imus’s rejoinder to CBS Radio, which fired the controversial U.S. radio host after his recent racist and sexist comments about a university-level women’s basketball team.
Imus has hired lawyer Martin Garbus, a First Amendment specialist, to help him sue his former employer.
Garbus said on Thursday that he expects to file a breach of contract suit on behalf of Imus by next week.
According to Garbus, part of the host’s CBS contract acknowledged his services to be “irreverent” and “controversial.”
Solidarity predicts end of affirmative action May 3, 2007Posted by C.A.R.D in affirmative action, African Americans, African-American, Black, Blacks, Citizens Against Racism and Discrimination, Indian, Johannesburg, Racism, Racist, reverse racism, South Africa, White, Whites.
A Johannesburg metro police campaign to recruit white, coloured and Indian members could be part of the slow death of affirmative action, the trade union Solidarity said on Thursday.
The scrapping of affirmative action — and discrimination against young white people — at entry-level is “a rapidly growing trend”, said Solidarity’s deputy general secretary, Dirk Hermann.
Apart from the Johannesburg metro police, several mining houses and large businesses are actively recruiting white people at lower levels, he said.
“This means that affirmative action is slowly dying from the bottom up.”
Solidarity saw the move as the first step in a process of exempting young people from affirmative action.
However, Hermann said it should not only be scrapped at the lower levels of the labour market, but throughout.
At the moment — in the metro police — minorities are being given the message that they are being recruited, but should not expect promotion.

From globalpolitician.com :
I had written much of this essay more than a year before I finally decided to post it online. A couple of personal experiences brought me onto the subject of non-white racism. I hesitated to post it, mainly because I instinctively dislike writing about anything related to race. I was brought up that way. Partly, I also convinced myself that I was first and foremost against Islam, and that writing about skin color would only complicate this fight.
However, after thinking about it for some time, I find that none of these arguments hold true. I am tired of ideological censorship. Western nations can never mount a defense against Muslim immigration if this is always dismissed as “racism.” But above all, if you believe that non-white racism exists, it is actually immoral not to deal with the problem and its victims. I am convinced that not just non-white, but also anti-white racism, are real and underestimated phenomena.
In London, an elderly driver who had a heart attack careered into a bus. Here you had a dying man, people trying to save him and police trying to clear the scene. Meanwhile, black youths at the scene just wanted to fight the cops. They shouted, ‘Who cares — it’s just a white man’.”

Radio host Don Imus apologized Friday for calling the Rutgers University women’s basketball team “nappy headed hos” on his nationally syndicated program.
The National Association of Black Journalists demanded his immediate firing after the man known as “Imus in the Morning” put his foot deep in his mouth Wednesday. Imus questioned the players’ looks, describing them as tattooed “rough girls.” His producer compared the team _ which has eight black members _ to the NBA’s Toronto Raptors.
Near the start of Friday’s show, Imus said he wanted to “apologize for an insensitive and ill-conceived remark we made the other morning referring to the Rutgers women’s basketball team.”
“It was completely inappropriate, and we can understand why people were offended. Our characterization was thoughtless and stupid, and we are sorry.”Gregory Lee, an NABJ officer and senior assistant sports editor at The Boston Globe, said the mea culpa did little to atone for the comments.
“You can apologize, but what does that mean when you have a history of making disparaging remarks about people?” Lee asked about the acid-tongued Imus. “This kind of behavior must be punished. I hope the company and sponsors he has take some sort of action … to educate him.”
NABJ President Bryan Monroe asked Thursday if Imus had “lost his mind” and called for the veteran radio host’s dismissal.
Imus was speaking with producer Bernard McGurk when the NCAA title game between Rutgers and Tennessee came up.

In September of 2006, TMZ.com had an article on their site that was entitled “Oprah Lords Over White Folk, Talks Poop on XM.” In this article it talks about how Oprah brags with her friend Gayle King on XM satellite radio about how she has an almost all white staff, and calls them “good white folks.” More recently, it seems that the Oprah’s racism is demonstrated through her girls school that was opened in Africa which is almost exclusively an all black school. When asked about this she claims that she does not have to appease the white people in the country. Yet, in another news clip she declares that she will not rest until every ‘black boy’ and every ‘black girl’ has had a chance to prove their worth.
It is becoming increasingly clear that some in the African National Congress want to ensconce affirmative action as a permanent measure and thus enforce a new form of apartheid, the Freedom Front Plus (FF+) said on Tuesday.
The party intends asking the International Labour Organisation (ILO) to pay urgent attention to its complaint about affirmative action, handed to the ILO’s Pretoria office on Youth Day last year, FF+ spokesperson Willie Spies said.
The complaint specifically deals with the fact that affirmative action in South Africa is increasingly being given a permanent nature, and that the position is being worsened through often-repeated populist statements in this regard by Labour Minister Membathisi Mdladlana.
“Mdladlana has this past weekend once again made the news when he said affirmative action will never be phased out in South Africa, but to the contrary will be sharpened.”
Spies said that going by Mdladlana’s past statements, it is clear he not only condones black-against-white prejudice, but even encourages it. “The ILO should take note of Mdladlana’s reckless actions in this regard.”
Is it racist for New York City to single out one racial slur and turn a blind eye to all the others? Is this constitutional? Is this the first steps of eroding free speech in America? Well regardless of what critics have said, New York City has now officially banned the use of the word ‘nigger’ in a “symbolic gesture.” Newsday.com has published some notable quotes from people in regard to this story. One of these quotes is:
“People are using it out of context. People are also denigrating themselves by using the word and disrespecting their history, disrespecting the history of a people and a country and also putting themselves in a negative light that we need to correct.” _ Councilman Leroy Comrie, sponsor of the bill.
The featured article follows below:
New York City symbolically banned use of the word nigger today, the latest step in a campaign that hopes to expunge the most vile of racial slurs from hip hop music and television.
The City Council unanimously declared a moratorium that carries no penalty but aims to stop youth from casually using the word, considered by most Americans to be the most offensive in the English language.
The New York City measure follows similar resolutions this month by the New York state assembly and state senate, and supporters of the ban are taking their campaign to The Recording Academy, asking it not to nominate musicians for Grammy awards if they use the word in their lyrics.
Many rap artists and young New Yorkers toss the word around as a term of endearment or as a substitute for black, angering some black leaders who consider those who use it as ignorant of the word’s hate-filled history in slavery and segregation.
“This could be the beginning of a movement,” councilman Albert Vann said.
Councilman Leroy Comrie, a sponsor of the moratorium, said the campaign against the word has gained strength since comedian Michael Richards spewed it in a racially charged tirade in Los Angeles.

A racist article was just printed in a San Francisco weekly newspaper named AsianWeek. Kenneth Eng who has called himself a Asian supremacist in the past was still writing for this newspaper even after he had in the past published articles called “Proof That Whites Inherently Hate Us” and “Why I Hate Asians.” AsianWeek has removed the “Why I Hate Blacks” article from the AsianWeek.com website, however, it was still published in the print edition of their newspaper. The website Independentconservative.com has a good column focusing on this hateful article. The following is the original text of the article AsianWeek published:
Why I Hate Blacks
Kenneth Eng, Feb 23, 2007
Here is a list of reasons why we should discriminate against blacks, starting from the most obvious down to the least obvious:
• Blacks hate us. Every Asian who has ever come across
them knows that they take almost every opportunity to hurl
racist remarks at us.
In my experience, I would say about 90 percent of blacks I have met, regardless of age or environment, poke fun at the very sight of an Asian. Furthermore, their activity in the media proves their hatred: Rush Hour, Exit Wounds, Hot 97, etc.

With a debate swirling nationwide over the n-word, a historically black college in Alabama has set aside four days to discuss the racial slur.Participants at the conference, which began Thursday and ends Sunday, discussed topics ranging from the origins of the epithet to whether juggling a few letters makes it socially acceptable at the “N” Surrection Conference at Stillman College.
Organizers said the goal of the event is to challenge the use of the n-word “through the use of intelligent dialogue and a thorough examination of black history.”
Debate over the use of the word has escalated in recent months, with comedian Michael Richards’ racial rant prompting black leaders such as the Rev. Jesse Jackson and California Congresswoman Maxine Waters to urge the public and the entertainment industry to stop using it.
Clarence Sutton Sr., president of the Tuscaloosa chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, said he’s taken deep offense to the slur since a 1960 incident when a knife-wielding white youth slapped him and said “Nigger, you wanna fight?”
“From that time on in my life, the word nigger was personal. I associated it with the hate and the very deep disdain that this gentleman had perpetrated on me at the time,” he said.
These days, Sutton said, it’s mostly other blacks he finds using the word.
“I’m fighting now because we have lost a generation of young people who don’t know the history associated with that word,” Sutton said.

Meeting on the grounds of the former Confederate Capitol, the Virginia General Assembly voted unanimously Saturday to express “profound regret” for the state’s role in slavery.
Sponsors of the resolution say they know of no other state that has apologized for slavery, although Missouri lawmakers are considering such a measure. The resolution does not carry the weight of law but sends an important symbolic message, supporters said.
“This session will be remembered for a lot of things, but 20 years hence I suspect one of those things will be the fact that we came together and passed this resolution,” said Delegate A. Donald McEachin, a Democrat who sponsored it in the House of Delegates.
The resolution passed the House 96-0 and cleared the 40-member Senate on a unanimous voice vote. It does not require Gov. Timothy M. Kaine’s approval.
The measure also expressed regret for “the exploitation of Native Americans.”
Inclusion of Planned Parenthood in a self-described civil rights coalition has outraged members of the black leadership network Project 21, as Planned Parenthood advocates and provides abortions – particularly in the black community.”How can a civil rights group that claims to support underprivileged blacks embrace an organization created expressly to hasten the demise of black people?” asked Project 21 Chairman Mychal Massie. “People of conscience should be appalled and outraged by this alignment.”
The Planned Parenthood Federation of America recently became a member of the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights (LCCR), a political coalition of almost 200 groups representing liberal racial, gender, age, disability and religious special interests as well as labor unions. The LCCR is most often known in recent years for its opposition to judicial nominees who adhere to an orginalist interpretation of the Constitution.
The founding of Planned Parenthood, originally founded as the National Birth Control League in 1916 and later called the American Birth Control League before adopting its current name in 1942, is largely credited to Margaret Sanger. In the late 1930s, Sanger began a program known as the “Negro Project” that sought to improve public health and welfare by encouraging abortions in the black community. This agenda was promoted in part by befriending black ministers.
In announcing the new affiliation, Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington president and CEO Jatrice Martel Gaiter said her group and the LCCR now “share a dedication to promoting human rights” as well as alleged “committed to justice and equality.” LCCR president Wade Henderson added that Planned Parenthood was “one of the nation’s leading health care advocates” and that “health care reform is the next frontier for the civil rights movement.”
In a poll conducted by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press released in August of 2006, 70 percent of surveyed blacks of the Protestant faith believed that abortion should be more limited than it is today or made totally illegal.

It’s February, and the annual debate has begun. The subject of Black History Month becomes the centerpiece of many a water-cooler conversation.
A poll of almost 10,000 Americans conducted in January shows there is no consensus on the topic of Black History Month. The survey, conducted by MSN and Zogby International, found that 43 percent of Americans believe setting one month of the year to focus on a racially defined observance is a token gesture, while 39 percent say that is an opportunity to raise awareness of African-American history and accomplishments (18 percent are not sure).
Is it a valuable and necessary way for African-American history—an essential part of American history—to be offered to the public?
Or is it, as one scholar wrote in the Journal of Blacks in Higher Education, “simply a guilt-driven public relations scam to pacify blacks who otherwise receive no attention on the bread and butter issues of education, jobs, and health care?”
African-Americans have varying opinions on the issue, too. The poll found that 28 percent feel that dedicating only February to black history is a token gesture. Celebrities Morgan Freeman and Bill Cosby have spoken out against it. “I don’t want a black history month,” Freeman said on 60 Minutes. “Black history is American history.” Comedians Chris Rock and Dick Gregory have made jokes about it. Recently, The Daily Show With Jon Stewart did a riff on the debate over Black History Month.
