PLANTATION KEY, Fla. — Two members of Gideons International arrested for distributing Bibles on a public sidewalk will be represented by Alliance Defense Fund attorneys. Anthony Mirto and Ernest Simpson were arrested, booked into jail, and charged with trespassing.

“The First Amendment protects the right to engage in religious speech on a public sidewalk,” said ADF Senior Legal Counsel David Cortman. “Members of the Gideons have been highly respected for decades as peaceful providers of free Bibles to those who want them.”

On Jan. 19, Mirto and Simpson began distributing copies of the Bible on a public sidewalk outside Key Largo School. Neither man entered school grounds. After the school’s principal called police, a Monroe County Sheriff’s officer asked the men to leave immediately or face trespassing charges. As the men prepared to leave, the officer decided to arrest both individuals.
A hearing will be held March 5 in the County Court in and for Monroe County, Florida, in State of Florida v. Simpson and State of Florida v. Mirto. ADF attorneys are preparing a motion to dismiss the charges.

It seems that we are currently seeing more and more cases of religious discrimination.  One such case we covered before was a woman that was banned from wearing a cross on flights [Link].  Now a different airline is banning a woman from carrying a Bible with her on a flight to Saudi Arabia.  The featured article follows below:

A BRITISH airline has banned its crew from taking the Bible into Saudi Arabia for fear of upsetting Muslims.BMI bosses have told staff they must take the Koran instead.

One middle-aged stewardess is to sue BMI for religious discrimination at an industrial tribunal due to take place in the New Year.

In the meantime she will be excluded from BMI flights to Saudi Arabia.

A BMI source said: “Foreign Office advice is that non-Islamic religious material is not permitted in Saudi.”

But another BMI worker said: “We understand our embassy has confirmed that the Saudis never enforce this rule.

“The stewardess is deeply religious and takes her Bible everywhere she travels.

“The bottom line is BMI don’t want to jeopardise the Saudi route, which is worth millions to them.”

The ban follows BA’s climbdown on a rule prohibiting staff wearing crosses — which triggered a mass protest.

A homosexual-activist police officer assigned to security at a Promise Keepers men’s conference in Florida is being investigated for threatening members of a Christian organization petitioning for a state constitutional marriage amendment.

“I have never in my life seen such unprofessional and bizarre behavior from a law enforcement officer,” said John Stemberger, the president and general counsel of the Florida Family Policy Council.

“Would Jesus discriminate?” The question has been popping up on billboards, yard signs and in newspaper ads around conservative central Indiana lately in a new Bible-based appeal for acceptance of gays and lesbians. It’s a campaign organized by a predominantly gay and lesbian denomination — Metropolitan Community Churches — and a Jewish gay activist.

Organizers say the effort is the first in a planned series of campaigns across the country aimed at getting people to take a fresh look at the social justice passages in the Bible.

For forty years, the United States has lived with a variety of government programs applying preferential treatment based on race or gender or both. These programs have generally been limited to education and public contracting.

Recently, in a 2-1 decision, a panel of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals handed down a decision which may provide a foundation for applying preferential treatment to freedom of speech. If allowed to stand, the decision could authorize local governments to set varying limits to free expression, depending on the race, religion, or sexual orientation of the listener.
