Term of Israeli ambassador to Australia cut short after racist remarks made during interview with ‘Haaretz’. Ambassador referred to Australia and Israel as belonging to ‘white race,’ not ‘yellow’ one – Foreign Ministry to issue tender for his position

It seems Israeli ambassador to Australia Naftali Tamir will find himself on a plane home sooner than he originally planned. Tamir’s term as ambassador will be cut short by the Foreign Ministry following the publication in Haaretz newspaper of racist comments attributed to the ambassador, referring to Asian natives as the “yellow race”.

The Foreign Ministry confirmed that a tender will be issued in the coming weeks. Tamir began his term in January 2005, the issuing of a tender to find his replacement would effectively cut his original Australian term short.

Israel’s ambassador to Norway has complained to press regulators about a cartoon showing Israeli PM Ehud Olmert as a Nazi concentration camp commander. Miryam Shomrat told the BBC the caricature in Oslo’s Dagbladet newspaper went beyond free speech.

Ms Shomrat said it would be open to prosecution in some European countries.

Dagbladet’s editor said the caricature was “within the bounds of freedom of expression,” according to Norway’s NRK state broadcaster.

Ms Shomrat made the official complaint to the Norwegian Press Trade Committee following the publication of the cartoon on 10 July.

In an interview with the BBC’s Europe Today, she said however that her protest could not be compared to the outcry in the Muslim world over the publication in a Danish newspaper of cartoons depicting the Prophet Mohammed.

Lars Helle, Dagbladet’s acting editor-in-chief, said the newspaper was taking the complaint seriously.

Imagine a member of the KKK going on the Bill O’Reilly show and declaring all African-Americans are shiftless crackheads. Imagine the outrage and calls for Fox News to be investigated for promoting racism and hatred. Now imagine an Israeli diplomat going on Bill O’Reilly’s show and declaring all Muslims are terrorists. In fact, this happened, and nobody is calling the diplomat, Dan Gillerman, Israeli Ambassador to the UN, a racist or are there demands Fox News be investigated for promoting racism and hatred.
