Rapper has dismissed comparisons between sexist hip-hop lyrics and the recent racist remarks made by radio DJ Don Imus.

Imus was suspended by CBS Radio and MSNBC on Monday after he referred to the Rutgers University women’s basketball team as ‘nappy-headed hos’–a racially charged sexist term.

Snoop frequently refers to women as “b**ches” and “hos” in his music, but he insists Imus’ use of the term was unacceptable and the 66-year-old DJ should be taken off the air.

The Doggystyle star says, “It’s a completely different scenario.”

New York bans ‘nigger’ slur: Eroding free speech in America? March 1, 2007

Is it racist for New York City to single out one racial slur and turn a blind eye to all the others? Is this constitutional? Is this the first steps of eroding free speech in America? Well regardless of what critics have said, New York City has now officially banned the use of the word ‘nigger’ in a “symbolic gesture.” Newsday.com has published some notable quotes from people in regard to this story. One of these quotes is:

“People are using it out of context. People are also denigrating themselves by using the word and disrespecting their history, disrespecting the history of a people and a country and also putting themselves in a negative light that we need to correct.” _ Councilman Leroy Comrie, sponsor of the bill.

The featured article follows below:

New York City symbolically banned use of the word nigger today, the latest step in a campaign that hopes to expunge the most vile of racial slurs from hip hop music and television.

The City Council unanimously declared a moratorium that carries no penalty but aims to stop youth from casually using the word, considered by most Americans to be the most offensive in the English language.

The New York City measure follows similar resolutions this month by the New York state assembly and state senate, and supporters of the ban are taking their campaign to The Recording Academy, asking it not to nominate musicians for Grammy awards if they use the word in their lyrics.

Many rap artists and young New Yorkers toss the word around as a term of endearment or as a substitute for black, angering some black leaders who consider those who use it as ignorant of the word’s hate-filled history in slavery and segregation.

“This could be the beginning of a movement,” councilman Albert Vann said.

Councilman Leroy Comrie, a sponsor of the moratorium, said the campaign against the word has gained strength since comedian Michael Richards spewed it in a racially charged tirade in Los Angeles.

Alabama college hosts ‘n-word’ conference February 26, 2007

With a debate swirling nationwide over the n-word, a historically black college in Alabama has set aside four days to discuss the racial slur.Participants at the conference, which began Thursday and ends Sunday, discussed topics ranging from the origins of the epithet to whether juggling a few letters makes it socially acceptable at the “N” Surrection Conference at Stillman College.

Organizers said the goal of the event is to challenge the use of the n-word “through the use of intelligent dialogue and a thorough examination of black history.”

Debate over the use of the word has escalated in recent months, with comedian Michael Richards’ racial rant prompting black leaders such as the Rev. Jesse Jackson and California Congresswoman Maxine Waters to urge the public and the entertainment industry to stop using it.

Clarence Sutton Sr., president of the Tuscaloosa chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, said he’s taken deep offense to the slur since a 1960 incident when a knife-wielding white youth slapped him and said “Nigger, you wanna fight?”

“From that time on in my life, the word nigger was personal. I associated it with the hate and the very deep disdain that this gentleman had perpetrated on me at the time,” he said.

These days, Sutton said, it’s mostly other blacks he finds using the word.

“I’m fighting now because we have lost a generation of young people who don’t know the history associated with that word,” Sutton said.

New York bans ‘nigger’ slur: Eroding free speech in America?

A city politician wants to see the n-word abolished. On the first day of Black History Month, Queens Councilman Leroy Comrie yesterday introduced a resolution calling on New Yorkers to shun the racial slur.

“It’s my hope this resolution will spark a dialogue in all communities and begin to move our society, especially in our entertainment culture, toward a place where the n-word is simply unacceptable to be used in any context,” Comrie said.

Among supporters was Deputy Mayor Dennis Walcott, who said, “I’m a black man who is someone who is just offended anytime I hear the n-word. No matter who uses the word, it’s totally unacceptable. It’s a word that should be banned from our language altogether.”

Japanese convenience store chain FamilyMart and other retailers are pulling copies of a book on “foreigner crime” from their shelves after a wave of complaints, the stores said yesterday.

The front cover of Shocking Foreigner Crime: The Undercover File, published in Japanese, features caricatures of non-Japanese, alongside the question: “Is it all right to let foreigners devastate Japan?”

“We are removing the book from our shelves today,” said Takehiko Kigure of FamilyMart Co’s public relations department. “We had complaints from customers, and when we checked the content of the magazine, we found that it contained some inappropriate language,” he added.

Inside the glossy magazine-style book, photographs and illustrations show what the editors say are non-Japanese engaged in criminal or reprehensible behaviour.

“We wanted to take this up as a contemporary problem,” said Shigeki Saka of Tokyo-based publishers Eichi, which also publishes magazines on popular US and South Korean television dramas. “I think it would be good if this becomes a chance to broaden the debate,” he added.

One caption in the magazine refers to a black man as “nigger”. “This is not a racist book, because it is based on established fact,” Saka said. “If we wanted to be racist, we could write it in a much more racist way,” he added, saying that the word “nigger” was not considered offensive in Japan.

Racism behind Texas Mayor’s N-Word Ban? February 4, 2007

From Mel Gibson’s anti-Semitic rant, to Michael Richard’s racist tirade, to the anti-gay slurs voiced by Grey’s Anatomy star, Isaiah Washington, the question on my mind has been, “Where did all of that hatred come from, and what, if anything, does it say about the state of America’s melting pot?”

It is against this backdrop that Brazoria, Texas mayor, Ken Corley, who is 62 and white, recently sought to outlaw use of the “N-word” in his town of 2800 (about 10 percent of whom are black). Under the proposed law, users of the N-word would be fined $500.

Eventually, the mayor announced he was dropping the proposal altogether — which was a very sound decision from a legal perspective. As ugly as the N-word is, the ordinance would have been in direct conflict with First Amendment protections of free speech, and a competent court would certainly have thrown it out.

Texas Mayor Singles Out N-Word for Ban January 24, 2007

It’s one of the most reviled words in the English language, but if one Texas mayor gets his way, getting caught uttering the “N-word” will hit offenders where it hurts.

Mayor Ken Corley of Brazoria, Texas, has proposed a city ordinance that would make using the word in an offensive fashion a crime equal to disturbing the peace and punishable by a fine of up to $500. But legal experts said it’s unlikely the law will stand up to the First Amendment.

“I would like to, if possible, ban all racial slurs,” Corley told FOXNews.com. “We chose this word because it’s the most controversial issue throughout the United States today.”

Corley said the city would like to go after the use of other racial slurs, “but we want to take this one step at a time, depending on public opinion.”

The 62-year-old mayor, who is a self-described “middle-class white boy,” got the idea for the ordinance after watching Rev. Jesse Jackson and Rev. Al Sharpton discuss banning the N-word on TV after “Seinfeld” comedian Michael Richards used it in an act last November.

“The word is not used or abused in the streets of our town; it’s more, amongst the black community, as a term of endearment, OK?” Corley said. “But it is a national issue, and I would like the city of Brazoria to take a leadership role throughout the nation in banning the use of this word.”

Roots of Latino/black anger January 17, 2007

Longtime prejudices, not economic rivalry, fuel tensions.

THE ACRIMONIOUS relationship between Latinos and African Americans in Los Angeles is growing hard to ignore. Although last weekend’s black-versus-Latino race riot at Chino state prison is unfortunately not an aberration, the Dec. 15 murder in the Harbor Gateway neighborhood of Cheryl Green, a 14-year-old African American, allegedly by members of a Latino gang, was shocking.

Yet there was nothing really new about it. Rather, the murder was a manifestation of an increasingly common trend: Latino ethnic cleansing of African Americans from multiracial neighborhoods. Just last August, federal prosecutors convicted four Latino gang members of engaging in a six-year conspiracy to assault and murder African Americans in Highland Park. During the trial, prosecutors demonstrated that African American residents (with no gang ties at all) were being terrorized in an effort to force them out of a neighborhood now perceived as Latino.

For example, one African American resident was murdered by Latino gang members as he looked for a parking space near his Highland Park home. In another case, a woman was knocked off her bicycle and her husband was threatened with a box cutter by one of the defendants, who said, “You niggers have been here long enough.”

At first blush, it may be mystifying why such animosity exists between two ethnic groups that share so many of the same socioeconomic deprivations. Over the years, the hostility has been explained as a natural reaction to competition for blue-collar jobs in a tight labor market, or as the result of turf battles and cultural disputes in changing neighborhoods. Others have suggested that perhaps Latinos have simply been adept at learning the U.S. lesson of anti-black racism, or that perhaps black Americans are resentful at having the benefits of the civil rights movement extended to Latinos.

Although there may be a degree of truth to some or all of these explanations, they are insufficient to explain the extremity of the ethnic violence.

Over the years, there’s also been a tendency on the part of observers to blame the conflict more on African Americans (who are often portrayed as the aggressors) than on Latinos. But although it’s certainly true that there’s plenty of blame to go around, it’s important not to ignore the effect of Latino culture and history in fueling the rift.

NEW YORK — Comedian Michael Richards said Sunday that he did not consider himself a racist and that he was “shattered” by the comments he made to two young black men during a tirade last week at the Laugh Factory in West Hollywood.

Richards appeared on the Rev. Jesse Jackson’s nationally syndicated radio program, “Keep Hope Alive,” as a part of a series of apologies for the incident. He said he knew his comments hurt the black community and hoped to meet with the men. He told Jackson that he had not used the language before.

“That’s why I’m shattered by it. The way this came through me was like a freight train. After it was over, when I went to look for them, they had gone. And I’ve tried to meet them, to talk to them, to get some healing,” he said.

Michael Richards, the actor loved by millions as Seinfeld’s peculiar neighbour Kramer, has turned to an equally legendary public relations guru to save his career after last week’s racist outburst.

Richards has signed up Howard Rubenstein, whose New York-based PR firm is the first port of call for many stars in a fix.

The actor’s future looks bleak after he used the word “nigger” several times in a tirade against two black hecklers at the Laugh Factory in Los Angeles last Friday night.

Video of the incident appeared on the celebrity news website tmz.com and has been widely circulated.

The actor made an impromptu appearance on the David Letterman show earlier this week and apologised, saying his words had been fuelled by anger, not bigotry. But Mr Rubenstein’s appointment suggests that he feels further damage limitation is needed.

The PR chief’s first act has been to put Richards in touch with the anti-racism campaigners Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson.

– In the aftermath of the media frenzy surrounding actor-comedian Michael Richards’ use of a racial slur, black leaders from across the political spectrum are calling on African Americans to reflect on their own use of the controversial word.

During a standup comedy performance in Los Angeles Nov. 17, Richards, best known for playing Cosmo Kramer on the long-running “Seinfeld” sitcom, launched into a tirade against black hecklers in the audience, repeatedly using the word “nigger.”

After a video clip of the performance surfaced on the Internet, Richards came under fire from black leaders and media commentators. He used a Nov. 20 appearance on CBS’ “Late Show With David Letterman” to apologize, saying he was “deeply, deeply sorry” and adding, “I am not a racist.”

Rev. Jesse Jackson, founder of the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition and longtime liberal activist, told the Chicago Defender Wednesday that Richards’ “racist rant” was not the big issue raised by the controversy.

“The bigger issue here,” Jackson told the black newspaper, “is that we must challenge all media to stop saying in the records [we play] and in the videos the word nigger. We must move our young people from using the word nigger.”

Michael Richards exploded in anger as he performed at a famous L.A. comedy club last Friday, hurling racial epithets that left the crowd gasping, and TMZ has obtained exclusive video of the ugly incident. Richards, who played the wacky Cosmo Kramer on the hit TV show “Seinfeld,” appeared onstage at the Laugh Factory in West Hollywood. Kyle Doss, an African-American, told TMZhe and some friends were in the cheap seats and he was playfully heckling Richards when suddenly, the comedian lost it.

The camera started rolling just as Richards began his attack, screaming at one of the men, “Fifty years ago we’d have you upside down with a f***ing fork up your ass.”

Richards continued, “You can talk, you can talk, you’re brave now motherf**ker. Throw his ass out. He’s a nigger! He’s a nigger! He’s a nigger! A nigger, look, there’s a nigger!”

A former African-American crewman who once worked on NASCAR ‘s Winston Cup circuit sued the governing body of the U.S. stock car series on Tuesday for race discrimination and breach of contract. David Scott, who worked as a motorcoach driver to one of the racing teams, claimed NASCAR executives deceived him and did not fulfill promises of a job following a well-publicized 1999 racial incident involving white motorcoach drivers, according to the complaint filed in Manhattan federal court that seeks unspecified damages.
