When a hotel sets aside a floor and a lounge for women only, is it discrimination or good business?

As TODAY co-host Matt Lauer discovered, it might be both, depending on whom you ask.

“It is discrimination,” said Los Angeles attorney Gloria Allred. “You are excluding men from the lounge. Are we going to have male-only lounges as we used to have? No. What we want are equal rights. Not more rights, not less rights, but equal rights.”

“Of course it’s for the bottom line,” countered Donny Deutsch of CNBC’s The Big Idea. It’s also a great idea, he added. “They’re in the business of helping and serving their customers. This is catering to women’s needs. It’s hospitality. What is wrong?”

The discussion was sparked when the new Marriott hotel in Grand Rapids, Mich., said it will set aside its 19th floor for women only. For an extra $30 a night, women will get such amenities as special hair dryers and toiletries.

They also get a women-only lounge where they can enjoy a drink without worrying about men hitting on them.

AK Steel will pay several black employees a total of $600,000 to settle charges of condoning racist threats and displays at its plant in Butler.

The “hostile work environment” in the Butler facility included nooses, Nazi graffiti, racial slurs and Ku Klux Klan videos, according to a lawsuit filed by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

A spokesman for AK Steel said the actions violated long-standing harassment policies, and denied that the company looked the other way. “In the interest of judicial expediency, we agreed to the settlement, although we deny the allegations,” said Alan McCoy. “The alleged behaviors were not condoned.”

Gerald Patterson, a black employee of AK Steel, died after filing the initial complaint with the EEOC against the company in 2003. The $600,000 will be split among his estate and seven other black workers at the plant.

Mississippi Man Arrested in Killing of 2 Blacks in ’64 January 28, 2007

ATLANTA, Jan. 24 — A 71-year-old man was arrested Wednesday in Mississippi on federal kidnapping charges stemming from the 1964 killing of two black teenagers who were tied to trees, whipped and drowned.

The suspect, James F. Seale, a former crop-duster, was indicted in Jackson and taken into custody in the southwestern Mississippi town of Roxie, not far from where the two young men were seized.

The charges against Mr. Seale, some seven years after the Federal Bureau of Investigation reopened the case, are the latest in a string of prosecutions of racially motivated slayings from the 1950s and ’60s. While virtually all the prosecutions so far have proved successful, investigators have long warned that every passing year makes it more difficult to build a case.

Many of those killings became nationally infamous, like the murder of three civil rights workers — James Chaney, Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner — portrayed decades later in the movie “Mississippi Burning.” But like dozens of lynchings in that era, the deaths of the two victims in this case, Henry H. Dee and Charles E. Moore, both 19, were far more obscure.

The discovery of their bodies, in the Old River near Natchez, Miss., attracted attention mainly because it was initially thought that they might be those of two of the three missing rights workers, who, as the nation looked on, were being sought by federal agents, dozens of volunteers and 400 Navy sailors.

Still, the Federal Bureau of Investigation took on the case, and in November of 1964 Mr. Seale, the son of a chapter leader of the White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, and another man, Charles Marcus Edwards, were arrested. They were never prosecuted, in part because fear of Klan retribution prevented witnesses from stepping forward. According to the case file, however, Mr. Edwards told F.B.I. agents that he, Mr. Seale and others had beaten the men but that they were alive when he left them.

Congressional Black Caucus: Whites Not Allowed January 24, 2007

As a white liberal running in a majority African American district, Tennessee Democrat Stephen I. Cohen made a novel pledge on the campaign trail last year: If elected, he would seek to become the first white member of the Congressional Black Caucus. Now that he’s a freshman in Congress, Cohen has changed his plans. He said he has dropped his bid after several current and former caucus members made it clear to him that whites need not apply.

“I think they’re real happy I’m not going to join,” said Cohen, who succeeded Rep. Harold Ford, D-Tenn., in the Memphis district. “It’s their caucus and they do things their way. You don’t force your way in. You need to be invited.”

Cohen said he became convinced that joining the caucus would be “a social faux pas” after seeing news reports that former Rep. William Lacy Clay Sr., D-Mo., a co-founder of the caucus, had circulated a memo telling members it was “critical” that the group remain “exclusively African-American.”

Other members, including the new chairwoman, Rep. Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick, D-Mich., and Clay’s son, Rep. William Lacy Clay, D-Mo., agreed.

“Mr. Cohen asked for admission, and he got his answer. … It’s time to move on,” the younger Clay said. “It’s an unwritten rule. It’s understood. It’s clear.”

The bylaws of the caucus do not make race a prerequisite for membership, a House aide said, but no non-black member has ever joined.

Rep. Pete Stark, D-Calif., who is white, tried in 1975 when he was a sophomore representative and the group was only six years old.

“Half my Democratic constituents were African American. I felt we had interests in common as far as helping people in poverty,” Stark said. “They had a vote, and I lost. They said the issue was that I was white, and they felt it was important that the group be limited to African Americans.”

A mentally ill man has been ordered by a judge to write a letter of apology to a Bermudian journalist he threatened to kill.
Thomas Osborn, 27, of Concord, Massachusetts, America, sent dozens of disturbing calls – many of them racist – to Glenn Jones, now a senior reporter at The Royal Gazette.
Mr. Jones, 29, from Smith’s Parish, was one of several Fox 25 TV personalities who was harassed through calls from Osborn, Judge James McGovern was told at Dedham District Court.
Authorities said Osborn called Fox’s Dedham newsroom from a pay phone and left threatening messages for Mr. Jones – who is black – two other reporters and a weatherman.
One message stated: “This is the KKK. You stepped into Concord and now you must die.”
Mr. McGovern continued the case for two years without a finding, but imposed a string of orders on Osborn and demanded he apologise to Mr. Jones in a letter.
In a statement submitted to the judge at Friday’s December 15 hearing, Mr. Jones said: “When I got the first few voice messages from the defendant, I ignored them for the most part.
“As a public figure, I have faced hate speech before. This tirade seemed more crazed to me than threatening.
“But as the weeks passed and the messages mounted, the tone became more sinister and far more difficult to ignore.”

Police have ended the racist intimidation that three young juveniles inflicted on a black 16-year-old boy:

Northern York Regional police have made arrests regarding the racist graffiti that defaced residents’ property in Dover Township last week. Three juvenile males, ages 15, 16 and 17, all of Dover Township, have been charged with ethnic intimidation and criminal mischief. Their cases have been forwarded to York County’s juvenile court.

On Dec. 11, police received two complaints from homeowners living in the Fox Chase area.

A children’s playhouse had been spray painted with the words “KKK” and “white power.”

Nearby, in the backyard of another house, vandals had burned a swastika into the grass.

Lt. Mark Bentzel said the boys had been targeting a black 16-year-old boy who lived at one of the houses.

Iran hosted a gathering of various representatives from France, the US and around the world who claims that either the Nazi holocaust never occurred, or it was exaggerated. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has said similar things several times.

Former politician and Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke traveled to Iran for the conference and according to the Iranian Foreign Ministry said the gas chambers in which millions perished actually did not exist. Nazila Fathi of the New York Times reports that Robert Faurisson, an academic from France, said in his speech that the Holocaust was a myth created to justify the occupation of Palestine, meaning the creation of Israel.

The meeting was called a “scholarly conference” in an editorial by the Indianapolis Star until “until one considers the source.” The conference was the “brainchild” of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who has called the Holocaust a myth and Israel’s existence illegitimate.

The conference, dubbed the “Review of the Holocaust: Global Vision”, is being attended by attended by rabbis and other observers, who will listen out of necessity but ought to be the ones most listened to, according to the Star. The editorial says that the Iran government and others wish to challenge Israel’s behavior toward the Palestinians, which is essentially what this affair and Middle Eastern Holocaust denial are about, they should argue state policy and spare us the transparent injection of bigotry against a people.

Michele Norris of National Public Radio (NPR) says there are two conferences on the Holocaust taking place today with two very different “aims” and in two very different places. The other conference is in Germany where it is illegal to deny the holocaust ever existed.

Blog Entry: Charles Krauthammer Just as Racist as KKK Members November 1, 2006

One of Stefan Karlsson’s blog entries was sent to us , which takes an interesting perspective on Charles Krauthammer and Senator Barack Obama. It can also be noted that this issue extends into most mainstream media reports covering the subject. Featured article below:

I have discussed Illinois Senator Barack Obama before. And as I wrote then, I have no particular problem with him. Or more correctly, I do have a problem with him since he is a liberal Democrat, but I’ve got no more problem with him than other liberal Democrats, like say John Kerry, Ted Kennedy or Hillary Clinton.

But while I’ve seen no evidence that he is a worse politician than John Kerry, Ted Kennedy or Hillary Clinton, nor have I seen any evidence that he is somehow better. Yet
he is mysterously hyped up and treated as the rising star of the Democratic party.

What quality have qualified him for that status? Nothing really, it seems, other than the fact that his father came from Kenya, which qualifies him for the privilege-associated status of “African-american”, despite the fact that his mother was white.

Usually, his boosters are not as honest of the racist basis of their support for Barack Obama as Charles Krauthammer was in his latest column, but Krauthammer is likely very representative of the true feelings and motives of the Barack Obama boosting crowd.

In it he wrote:
” Third, the country hungers for a black president. Not all the country, but enough that, on balance, race would be an asset. It is no accident that when, a decade ago, another attractive, articulate African-American with no experience in electoral office went on a book tour, he was met not just with rock star adulation but with a loud national chorus urging him to run for the presidency.

Neb. tries to oust trooper linked to KKK August 27, 2006

Robert Henderson was not fired as a state trooper because he belonged to the Ku Klux Klan and another white supremacist group, authorities said. Instead, he was ousted because he could not uphold public trust while participating in such groups, they said.

An arbitrator disagreed, ordering the State Patrol to reinstate Henderson within 60 days and pay him back wages. The state went to court Friday to keep him off the force.

“The integrity of Nebraska’s law enforcement is at risk,” Attorney General Jon Bruning said at news conference in Lincoln. “The Constitution does not require law enforcement to employ anyone tied to the KKK.”

In a summary of the causes for firing Henderson in March, the State Patrol said membership in the KKK “seriously compromised” Henderson’s ability to do his job.

Henderson and the state troopers union appealed and, under its contract, went to binding arbitration, to get his job back.

A former African-American crewman who once worked on NASCAR ‘s Winston Cup circuit sued the governing body of the U.S. stock car series on Tuesday for race discrimination and breach of contract. David Scott, who worked as a motorcoach driver to one of the racing teams, claimed NASCAR executives deceived him and did not fulfill promises of a job following a well-publicized 1999 racial incident involving white motorcoach drivers, according to the complaint filed in Manhattan federal court that seeks unspecified damages.
