A BACKPACKERS’ hostel in Wales is being investigated by the Commission for Racial Equality (CRE) after it banned British people from staying there.

Cardiff Backpacker, which advertises rooms on its website for “foreign passport holders only”, has been told this is illegal by the CRE.

The hostel’s management has defended the policy, saying they offer alternative accommodation for British guests.

But Chris Myant, from CRE Wales, said: “This is unlawful under the Race Relations Act. You must not advertise an intention to discriminate.”
