Muslims in Europe face discrimination on a daily basis, a report by the EU Monitoring Centre on Racism and Xenophobia (EUMC) said in its latest study launched Monday in Vienna.

EUMC head Beate Winkler stressed that Islamophobic incidents remained “under-documented and under-reported.” In a large majority of the 25 EU-member states, there was insufficient data on incidents discriminating Muslims.

The 117-page survey examines daily experiences of the estimated 13 million Muslims living in the European Union and reinforces the urgency of tackling the problems surrounding immigration and integration.

Winkler said that while integration was of course a two-way street, lack of combating discrimination would severely undermine integration. “Firm political leadership is needed to ensure equal treatment of all Europeans, whatever their background,” Winkler said.
